FAQ

Could you provide more details about the Trinity CertTESOL course content?

The Trinity CertTESOL online course presents a comprehensive overview of the theory and practice of English language teaching, providing deep insights into the teacher’s role and the challenges that learners may encounter.

The Trinity CertTESOL curriculum explores a range of topics such as teaching methodologies, grammar and language awareness, and also provides opportunities for observation of experienced teachers and practical experience of teaching English to adults.

For a more detailed breakdown of the Trinity CertTESOL syllabus and course content, we recommend visiting the Trinity College London website.

Is prior teaching experience required to join the Trinity CertTESOL course?

The Trinity CertTESOL course is crafted to accommodate those who have little or no experience in teaching English. This program furnishes candidates with the fundamental skills and knowledge necessary to commence their first role as an English language teacher.

However, this doesn’t mean that the Trinity CertTESOL course isn’t beneficial for experienced teachers too! Interestingly, experienced teachers might discover that they’ve developed certain habits that new teachers won’t have to confront!

Is it necessary to be an expert in English grammar to teach English?

Not at all! You don’t need to be an ‘expert’ in grammar. The Trinity CertTESOL course incorporates several units specifically designed to enhance your grammar and language awareness.

However, it’s important to note that a basic understanding of grammatical terminology is expected at the interview stage. As such, we recommend familiarising yourself with this prior to starting the Trinity CertTESOL course.

English isn't my first language. Can I join the Trinity CertTESOL online course?

Absolutely! Your experience of learning English as a second language could be particularly valuable during the Trinity CertTESOL course. However, if English isn’t your first language, you’ll need to exhibit high proficiency in English language skills – listening, speaking, reading, and writing – at the interview stage.

Does the course qualify me to teach both children and adults?

Our program includes a unit focused on the methods of instructing English to young learners. The CertTESOL is generally recognized and accepted in private language schools, thus should provide a good foundation for securing a position. Over time, with accumulated experience, you may desire to delve deeper into or even specialize in teaching children.

Trinity College’s TYLEC (Teaching Young Learner Extension Certificate) course can offer further insight into specific pedagogy for young learners. Please be aware, however, that teaching in UK state schools generally requires a PGCE qualification or its equivalent. Alternatively, positions as teaching assistants are available without a PGCE.

Are the CertTESOL, CELTA, and TEFL courses the same?

While there are some similarities between the CertTESOL and the CELTA, a qualification accredited by Cambridge ESOL, they are not identical.

The two differ in some of their specific elements and assessment methods, with Trinity placing considerable focus on reflective journaling, professional growth, and self-evaluation for trainees.

Importantly, both the CELTA and CertTESOL qualifications are internationally acknowledged and approved by the British Council as foundational qualifications for teachers in its accredited institutions, both in the UK and abroad. They are both also accredited at level 5 on the UK Qualifications Framework.

‘TEFL’, or ‘Teaching English as a Foreign Language’, is a broader term encompassing the entire field and industry. Occasionally, non-accredited programs, such as some online and weekend courses, are referred to as ‘TEFL’ courses. Although these courses can serve as a brief introduction to the profession, their lack of accreditation means the content and quality can vary significantly. It’s crucial to bear in mind that many schools and teaching centers do not accept these as valid teaching qualifications.

Is it true that schools don't recognize online teaching qualifications?

Schools and teaching centers may not accept unaccredited TEFL qualifications obtained purely via online courses, particularly if the course is lacking any practical teaching experience.

However, our course is fully accredited by Trinity College London and OFQUAL (UK qualifications framework), and contains at least 6 hours of observed and graded practical teaching using a variety of online teaching software.

Neither Trinity College nor OFQUAL distinguish between online or face to face delivery on their courses. So, upon successful completion of our course, you’ll be awarded exactly the same, internationally recognized, Trinity College and OFQUAL accredited CertTESOL certificateidentical to that provided by any other accredited course provider – face to face or online.

Is there a possibility I could fail the Trinity CertTESOL course?

Worldwide, the Trinity CertTESOL enjoys a notably high pass rate, although it’s important to realize it isn’t 100%. The fact that success isn’t absolutely guaranteed stands as a testament to the rigorous quality of the Trinity CertTESOL courses.

However, there’s no need for undue worry – our tutors bring a wealth of experience and offer extensive support throughout the Trinity CertTESOL course.

Furthermore, our interview process is rigorous, ensuring we only accept course fees from candidates we genuinely believe are prepared for the demands of the course.
